Passing the Medical Technologists (MedTech) Licensure Examination is the final step toward earning your RMT title and launching a rewarding career in laboratory science. However, with vast medical concepts to memorize and complex laboratory procedures to master, preparation can feel overwhelming. This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about the board exam and explains how our free reviewer helps you achieve your goals.
What is the Medical Technologist Licensure Examination?
The Medical Technologist Licensure Examination is a nationwide board exam administered by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). This critical test measures the technical competence, analytical skills, and clinical readiness of medical laboratory science graduates.
The exam aims to protect public health by ensuring that only highly qualified professionals analyze laboratory specimens, release medical results, and assist physicians in diagnosing illnesses. Under Philippine law, passing this board exam is mandatory to legally practice as a Registered Medical Technologist (RMT) in clinical laboratories, hospitals, and research facilities.
Medical Technologist Board Exam Eligibility Requirements
The PRC maintains strict guidelines for applicants wishing to take the licensure exam. You can apply for the test if you meet the following baseline requirements:
- Degree: You must hold a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology (BSMT) or Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science (BSMLS) from a government-recognized college or university.
- Citizenship: You must be a Filipino citizen or a citizen of a foreign country with a reciprocity agreement.
- Character: You must be of good moral character and have no record of any criminal offense involving moral turpitude.
- Documentation: You must submit mandatory documents, like your Transcript of Records (TOR) with a scanned passport photo, a valid NBI Clearance, and a PSA Birth Certificate.
What is the Passing Score for the Medical Technologist Licensure Exam
To pass the Medical Technologist Licensure Examination, an examinee must obtain a General Weighted Average (GWA) of at least 75.00% and have no rating below 50% in any major subjects. However, even if you achieve a GWA of 75.00% or higher and have no individual grade below 50%, the combined total weighted score of the 4 major subjects must not fall below 60%.
This means that because the core subjects—Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology & Parasitology, Hematology, and Blood Banking & Serology—make up 80% of the entire exam.
If your total major score drops to 59% or lower, you will automatically fail the board exam. Even if you get perfect scores in your minor subjects and mathematically push your overall average past 75%, the system will still fail you if your core major subjects aren’t strong enough
To understand how this grading policy works in real testing scenarios, consider these two examples:
Example 1 (Passed):
| Core Subjects | Percentage Score = Raw Score/Total Items | Weighted Score = PS x Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Clinical Chemistry (Major) | 50/100 = 50% | 50 x .20 = 10% |
| Microbiology and Parasitology (Major) | 95/100 = 95% | 95 x .20 = 19% |
| Hematology (Major) | 80/100 = 80% | 80 x .20 = 16% |
| Blood Banking and Serology (Major) | 77/100 = 77% | 77 x .20 = 15.4% |
| Clinical Microscopy | 73/100 = 73% | 73 x .10 = 7.3% |
| Histopathology Techniques and MedTech Laws and Ethics | 75/100 = 75% | 75 x .10 =7.5% |
| Total: | 75.2% (PASSED) |
In Example 1, an applicant obtains an overall GWA of exactly 75.20% with no score below 50 in any major subject. This applicant passed the board exam because the overall average hits the threshold and no single subject falls below 50.00%.
Example 2 (Failed):
| Core Subjects | Percentage Score = Raw Score/Total Items | Weighted Score = PS x Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Clinical Chemistry (Major) | 49/100 = 50% | 49x .20 = 9.8% |
| Microbiology and Parasitology (Major) | 95/100 = 95% | 95 x .20 = 19% |
| Hematology (Major) | 90/100 = 80% | 90 x .20 = 18% |
| Blood Banking and Serology (Major) | 92/100 = 77% | 92 x .20 = 18.4% |
| Clinical Microscopy | 73/100 = 73% | 73 x .10 = 7.3% |
| Histopathology Techniques and MedTech Laws and Ethics | 75/100 = 75% | 75 x .10 =7.5% |
| Total: | 80.00% (PASSED) |
The examinee in Example 2 failed the board exam even though he achieved a high overall GWA of 80.00%; he obtained 49.00% in Clinical Chemistry. Despite the excellent 80.00% average, this applicant fails the board exam because one subject dropped below the mandatory 50.00% limit.
Example 3 (Failed)
| Core Subjects | Percentage Score = Raw Score/Total Items | Weighted Score = PS x Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Clinical Chemistry (Major) | 55/100 = 55% | 55 x .20 = 11% |
| Microbiology and Parasitology (Major) | 80/100 = 80% | 80 x .20 = 16% |
| Hematology (Major) | 80/100 = 80% | 80 x .20 = 16% |
| Blood Banking and Serology (Major) | 80/100 = 80% | 80 x .20 = 16% |
| Clinical Microscopy | 95/100 = 95% | 95 x .10 = 9.5% |
| Histopathology Techniques and MedTech Laws and Ethics | 95/100 = 95% | 95 x .10 =9.5% |
| Total: | 78.00% (FAILED) |
In this scenario, the examinee failed the board exam despite getting a GWA of 78.00% and having no rating below 50% in any major subjects.
This failure happened because the combined total weighted score of his 4 major subjects was only 59%, which broke the 60% rule. Even though his exceptional performance in the minor subjects pulled his overall average up, he still failed the entire licensure exam because his core major subjects did not meet the mandatory minimum weight threshold.
